Hello everyone, we have compiled a set of travel tips for JFK Airport, which, established in 1948, is presently undergoing significant construction work to evolve into a premier international gateway airport. This renovation project commenced in early 2024 and is anticipated to run until 2026. Despite some terminal enhancements over time, envisioning the future travel experience through a fresh, impressive, and improved airport is truly thrilling. The ambiance might resemble that of La Guardia airport, albeit on a grander scale. Naturally, the primary drawback will involve managing disruptions throughout the construction phase.

Heading to JFK is often associated with traffic congestion. Our clients traveling from Fairfield County, Connecticut, can confirm the heavy traffic on I-95 or the Merritt Parkway, followed by the Whitestone Bridge, the crowded Van Wyck Expressway, and then the additional challenge of navigating through JFK traffic to reach the terminals. Careful planning of your departure and arrival times is essential for optimizing your travel experience. Remember that each terminal has its own characteristics, and the level of busyness can vary. JFK airport offers a website that regularly updates travelers on any changes or disruptions that may affect their plans.

While it's commendable that the airport keeps updating information, the fact that this information is subject to change at any moment can be disruptive to your plans. I encountered a highly stressful situation when I went to pick up my elderly mother and found that the terminal parking lot was closed due to being full. Although there was an alternative parking location available, it required navigating through traffic to a remote area where I would then need to take the airtrain. I was grateful for the alternative, but it posed significant challenges for both my mother, who has mobility issues, and myself.

Departures from JFK recommendations:

If you decide to drive and park your car when going to JFK, make sure to allow yourself extra time to locate an open parking lot, take the AirTrain, and check the JFK construction website for any AirTrain terminal closures and alternative options. When utilizing a limo service, it's advisable to schedule your pick-up time 15 to 20 minutes earlier than usual to account for potential terminal traffic.

Arrivals to JFK recommendations:

Upon arrival at JFK, it is important to consider the amount of luggage you have and the distance of the parking lot. Make sure to check the JFK construction website for any updates and follow the AirTrain signs. If you are being picked up by a limo service, always communicate with your driver and remember that cars are not permitted to wait in front of the terminal. If the driver is asked to move, they may encounter heavy traffic and you could end up waiting longer than anticipated. For passengers requesting meet & greet service, please be aware that we have recently faced difficulties parking at the open terminal parking lot at short notice, risking not being present upon your arrival if we park in an alternative location outside the terminal area, necessitating the use of the AirTrain.

Terminal 7 & 8 - JFK Airport Travel Tips

If you've ever been curious about the companies that handle the shipping of your freight packages at JFK airport, when you are on your way to terminal 7 or 8 via the Van Wyck Expressway, you'll get a glimpse of the less glamorous side of JFK. Due to ongoing construction, terminals 7 & 8 are not directly accessible from the Van Wyck Expressway. Instead, you will be redirected through alternate routes, passing by cargo areas, Port Authority office buildings, and various other aspects of airport operations that are often overlooked. This detour will result in some additional travel time, so it's advisable to plan accordingly. As you make your way towards terminals 7 & 8, you will encounter turns and stop at red lights. While the signage is clear during the day, navigating through the dimly lit back roads at night may pose a challenge.

In conclusion, with the holidays approaching, it will be a busy time for travel. Be prepared as we eagerly anticipate the opening of the new and updated airport. We hope that this will improve the travel experience for both passengers and limo companies. Stay tuned to our blog for regular updates as we share our experiences and new information.
